Day 5: New item quality, taunts and artworks

Valve brings another day with updates and informs about the last novelties in TF2 and the blog. Aside, it was announced, that the Meet the Medic Video has a total of 1.700.000 clicks on youtube. Before we start the actual news, here the recent changelog:

Source Engine Changes (CS:S, DoD:S, TF2, HL2:DM)

  • Updated the shared interfaces for the TF2 Free To Play update
  • Updated the shared localization files

Team Fortress 2

  • TF2 is now Free To Play
  • Added the Uber Update: http://www.teamfortress.com/uberupdate/
  • Added PL_Barnblitz, a new Payload map
  • Added all kinds of new goodies![1]
  • The Main menu now has a "Start Playing" option which presents users with various game modes to choose from. Once selected, the game matches the player into the best available server for that mode.
  • The Crafting interface has been redesigned to accommodate the fact that crafting blueprints are always known to players now.
  • The Item selection screen in Loadouts has been redesigned to support selection among a larger number of items.
  • Training improvements:
    • New training user interface
    • Added "A,W,S,D" movement instruction to Soldier training
    • Added ammo instruction to Engineer training
    • Clarified many instructional strings
  • Added new voting sounds
  • Fixed various Coaching bugs
  • Fixed various gameplay bugs

Undocumented changes

  • Fixed an exploit with the Chargin' Targe that allowed greater turning control than intended.
  • Demoman can now begin a charge while in midair.
  • The charge meter for the Chargin' Targe is no longer fully depleted if the user is interrupted by a Compression Blast.
  • The Chargin' Targe can now be refilled by resupply cabinets.
  • Advanced Option added: Spectator Target ID location.
  • Gorge now added to Offline Practice with official bot support
  • Strange item rarity added.
  • Planeswalker Goggles are now a misc. item
  • Added Mann Co. Supply Crate series #19, #20 and #21
  • Proof of Purchase, Professor Speks, Pocket Medic, Taunt: The Schadenfreude, Taunt: The Meet the Medic, and several new paints (Waterlogged Lab Coat, Balaclavas are Forever, An Air of Debonair, The Value of Teamwork, Cream Spirit, and Operator's Overall).

Along with the update, a load of new items found their way into the game, as we reported previously. Though, new are the Strange-Items, that include a Kill-Counter. That counter ranks the weapon by the reaching of special kill-levels. After 10 kills, the weapon is set from  "Strange" to "Unremarkable.

  • Strange
  • Unremarkable - 10 kills
  • Scarcely Lethal - 25 kills
  • Mildly Menacing - 45 kills
  • Somewhat Threatening - 70 kills
  • Uncharitable - 100 kills
  • ...

Since the ÜBER-Update, 2 new taunts are in the game. Firstly, there is the Schadenfreude taunt for all classes and secondly, there is the new Medic taunt, taken from Meet the Medic. We have now 2 videos presenting you all necessary information.
